Hypnosis:
Hypnosis is genuine psychological phenomenon that has many valid uses in clinical practice.
The power of hypnosis lies in your ability to harness the full potential of your imagination without the normal restrictions of the critical factor that filters information in your analytical conscious level of awareness. The hidden power of hypnotherapy is in the suggestions that you listen to and how much you embrace these new ideas. A skilled hypnotherapist can help you make dramatic changes to your life with collaboratively designed positive suggestions.
Hypnosis is essentially your conscious and always thinking mind being calm long enough for your subconscious levels of awareness (that drive your inner self, urging you on and telling you what you should and should not do) to take hold of ideas that are beneficial and positive for you. Entering trance improves with practice. Each time you are hypnotized you go faster and deeper into a pleasant hypnotic trance which allows positive suggestions to reach your deepest subconscious level of awareness where your problem solving intelligence resides.
Hypnosis feels very pleasant and relaxing. It is almost like taking a nap with the added benefit of the positive suggestions and imagery that you are guided to experience under trance. We liken it to guided meditation with a twist; the positive suggestions stay with you helping you to make the changes you desire to improve your life.
There are many unusual effects that one may experience while in trance; one such effect is arm levitation. This is where your arm rises up with a distinct sense that you are not doing it intentionally. (Note that none of these unusual effects can cause you any harm.)
Self-Hypnosis is a beneficial way to manage and achieve many of the same benefits of working with a hypnotherapist to make changes. It is also a tool and is taught as part of Integral Hypnotherapy to assist the co-therapist to continue the positive strides forward between sessions and throughout the rest of their life. It is, in fact, the responsibility of an integral hypnotherapist to teach all clients or co-therapists to utilize Self-Hypnosis. Remember that, like entering trance with a hypnotherapist, Self-Hypnosis is a skill that takes practice. Practice, practice, practice and you mind will learn to cooperate.
It is important to be aware that you cannot be hypnotized against your will. It works only if you agree to let it happen. People in hypnotic trance are in total control of themselves and would never do anything that they would, under normal circumstances, find objectionable.
